Why do you enjoy/respect Nolan's films?

What is it about them that draws you to them? I'm looking for some deep responses, so I figured this section would be the best place to go.

As for me, (I'm a little tired, so I'll post a more in-depth explanation later) Nolan's films come across to me as an amazing blend of emotion, depth, intellectual richness, and simply catch my interest in a way that many films aren't able to do. When I watch his films, I'm completely immersed in the world he's created, and find myself really connecting with the characters. I consider the characters in his films as being one of his biggest strengths, I think they speak for themselves, they are very vibrant, and very interesting.

Nolan seems to be one of those writers/directors that isn’t just in the business to entertain people, he seems to have a real passion for rich storytelling, and this is apparent when you watch his films. He's able to craft such captivating storys on a grand scale, and for that, I can't help but love his films.

Why do you enjoy/respect Nolan's films?

Let me get one thing straight: Nolan's films are not the only films I respect and enjoy the most. I do respect and enjoy them, but I don't single them out as the better. Or I try not to. I have my favourite directors and writers, and Nolan just so happens to be at the top of the game. But I respect all top films as equals.

However, the thing that really makes Nolan's near masterpieces so brilliant, is Nolan's cunning eye and his talent which make his films stand out. Look at his Batman titles. He completely reinvented Batman, he created a realistic world where Batman could exist and still be realistic. He turned a flopped, tired franchise into a riveting, exciting blend of action, chaos, fear and emotion. He created not only the best Batman films of all time, but the best super hero films of all time. Since then, I followed his work extremely closely. Then I delved into the worlds of Memento, Following, Insomnia, and The Prestige. Since those magical moments, I've come to realize that Nolan is a master of his work. His stories are always complicated, they always have power and engage me in every second of their running time. His direction is flawless, his characters are re memorable and likeable, and the way he tells a story is not only gripping, but revolutionary. Then came Inception, which got me interested in dreams and what's really reality. A film has never engrossed or interested me more than that, and his absolute precision is present in every single scene.

So, what am I saying? I'm saying that Nolan makes modern, kick ass classics which will never be forgotten. That's all I can be bothered to express at the moment. Maybe I'll come back later.

Why do you enjoy/respect Nolan's films?

With all the garbage directors and movies out there it's hard not to like Nolan's films. He engages the audience in a thought process that immerses them in the film while still keeping everyone entertained. He challenges the audience and respects that there are still a lot of people who are intelligent enough to react positively to his movies that are very much cerebral and some what demanding

I feel like he does so well with movies because he approaches each project from a story and theme perspective rather than initially an entertainment perspective. I will enjoy movies like Transformers or Avatar, but I need to turn my intellectual self off. I am primarily a story person, if there is a story to be told and a message to be sent then I'm on board. That, to me, is oftentimes more important than acting, visuals, and the "entertainment" aspect. Nolan is such a master at what he does that he delivers on that every time.

His reasoning for making TDKR is a great example of this. He said something to effect that he will only do it if there is a story to tell and the main purpose of making the film would be to complete the story, instead of "infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story." That is the perfect reason to finish a trilogy and come back for a sequel.

Past that, his films teach me things, things I cannot even begin to describe because they are so complex and I would need to write an essay about it. Hell, maybe I should.

Well said! Intellect is almost nonexistent in modern day cinema

"Unlike painting and literature, the cinema both gives to life and takes from it. Literature and painting both exist as art from the very start; the cinema doesn’t."
