As part of their Filmmakers Meet 500 Years of British Art series, Tate recently published a video of Christopher Nolan speaking about how British artist Francis Bacon has inspired his work. Bacon was a 20th-century figurative painter known for his graphic, abstract, and raw style. His art has been deeply influential, and highly prized; his work just recently setting the record for the most expensive piece of art ever auctioned at $142,405,000. How his work has influenced Christopher Nolan becomes more obvious when you look at Heath Legder’s portrayal of the Joker, but it doesn’t end there. Watch the video below to hear Christopher Nolan reveal his admiration of Bacon’s art.
