It’s been nearly 15 years since Christopher Nolan adapted the crime novel The Keys to the Street into a screenplay. The acclaimed filmmaker originally penned the adaptation sometime after his debut film, Following, was released in 1998. Along with his Howard Hughes biopic, The Keys to the Street was something Nolan was developing as a possible project post-Insomnia. The film was setup at Fox Searchlight, but Nolan ultimately felt it was too similar to the films he had already done. He eventually went on to make Batman Begins, and the rest — as they say — is history.
About three years ago, English actress Gemma Arterton was cast in a lead role for The Keys to the Street, which was still apparently in development. Not much was heard about the project, until a recent post from The Hollywood Reporter surfaced. The new report claims the project is now set for production next year, and is currently being shopped to international buyers by Myriad Pictures. Michael Stokes will add his name next to Nolan’s as writer, while Oscar nominee Tim Roth adds his name next to Gemma Arterton as a lead. Czech director Julius Sevcik will direct, Pretty Pictures and Apollo Productions will be producing, and Myriad is still looking to sell U.S. rights.
Slated to begin production in the U.K. early 2014, The Keys to the Street is the story of a woman who, after escaping from her violent husband, has a love affair with a man who is not who he seems to be. It will mark the first time a Christopher Nolan script will be filmed by another director — which should be interesting nonetheless. There is no word on Nolan’s thoughts or opinions regarding the new production, but it’s safe to assume he will not be playing a significant part in the production — if any at all. Nolan is currently filming Interstellar, which moves its production to Iceland this week.
