Did you guys use DSLRs at all prior to moving to dedicated hardware?

I'd really like to try my hand at all this and have been toying with buying a nice video body for weddings and wildlife, so I don't know if I should wait and get a dedicated body or get a gimbal etc for my DSLR.

reds just seem to cause problems on every set i've been on with them - the fans also get super loud and the older ones overheat, so sometimes you can't even leave them on standby. additionally, they feel more like a camera built by image technicians as opposed to cameras built by filmmakers. it sounds weird, but arri seems to design their cameras knowing how people actually use them. red builds cameras that you rig out. aside from the media port on the alexa mini which was designed by satan, arri menu and workflow is just much easier to use. (obviously i'd take red over an iPhone that was a joke)

that's fair i shoot basically handheld only, so the lightness of the aaton 16mm or the mini (which is heavier than the aaton somehow) usually will win for me. also, i've been doing a lot of 2nd AC shit lately, so shooting on full bodies is kind of miserable when you're constantly throwing cameras up on the operator's shoulder and whatnot

never used a kinefinity (or seen one) before

i wonder how proprietary it is - those ssd's are a minus, in my book. not sure about the mount it looks like you can adapt to PL? but for the price, it's probably okay to put up with some of the inconveniences you get by not shooting Arri or Red

footage looks great

the mount is just for adapters, which means you could swap between pl and ef, plus they have variable nd adapters. i lust.

I'm a writer and producer by trade but I'm trying to start shooting more. I want to DP something in a year's time, it's not something I'm particularly interested in but its what I know the least about and it would be a good challenge for myself.

I have been investing in my iPhone's camera a lot with buying the DJI Osmo 3 and some moment lenses for it but I'm saving up to buy a real camera.

I'm deciding between the Black Magic 4/6K camera or the Sony A7III. Which one do you like better? I might buy a more affordable 4K camera in the meantime and buy the more elite camera around Black Friday.
