It's actually the whole point of how Inception worked, and how he broke into his own mind. See, they forced him to spit out the first numbers that occurred to him, and in making them appear through all the dream levels, it sort of fed back his own numbers back to him, so when they get to the safe, he'd know exactly what to type into the safe in what he thought was brownings mind. He gave himself his own number from his subconscious to his conscious (lucid) self.

Wasn't there another lock? The one in which Cobb spun the top, and it drove Mal insane.

Saito had a lock, Mal had a lock. The lock represents ones subject or marks inner secret. Plant something there, and it might stick in reality depending on depth and the subconscious aspects of the mark or subject in question etc.

Saito being trained in dreamshare, was prepared for Cobb's extraction. So his idea remained secret.

Mal placed her totem toppled in her own safe while being the subject in Cobb's dream, consciously forgetting reality.

Mal's safe was located in a secret place in the dreamworld. And after she put it "in reality mode" inside her mind in Limbo, she could not break free. Cobb always knew what was real, and he never kept a totem. The idea of the spinning top is something he only found out about in the dreamworld. Mal must have had a radical notion about this after waking up since she placed it on the floor of the hotel room at the evening of her planned suicide.

So when Cobb finally found the secret place in limbo, he altered Mal's idea. And she was not prepared for that. She had to take a leap of faith and believe in Cobb when waiting for the train. And after they woke up, the altered idea placed by Cobb was still spinning in Mal's subconscious, making her doubt reality no matter if she spun the top or not to check herself. The top itself only carried a special property inside a dream and not reality. This is what made Cobb remember what was a dream and what was real, when Saito spun it in Limbo across the table from Cobb.

Oh yeah... Forgot about Saito's.
Good point.

Good point Vader, but if the number had not been forced,he would have still used the number anyway because he knew that was really the lockers code(now did he really know the true/real lockers code?),will it make difference to the movie? Is the real code for unlocking the locker same as the one he was forced to 'spit' out (or) was it a random number fed through dream levels to open a locker?
