Christopher Nolan has set up his next project with Warner Bros, an original screenplay he wrote called "Inception." The filmmaker hopes to shoot the sci-fi action film in the summer for a release during summer 2010.

Nolan will produce with partner Emma Thomas, who served as a producer on The Dark Knight. "Chris Nolan is a visionary filmmaker who continually raises the bar with each movie he makes," Warner Bros Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov said. "We are thrilled to be collaborating again with him and Emma on this exciting new motion picture."

"Inception" is described as "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind." This pushes back any potential filming on a new Batman film. Nolan has also long been attached to direct a big-screen adaptation of the British TV series "The Prisoner" for producer Scott Stuber at Universal.

With the great news of christopher nolans next film ''inception'' i've noticed that the majority of the on-line community only seemed concerned about what this could mean as far as scheduling for batman 3. Now there is no doubt that the dark knight was a masterpiece and a cultural phenomenon which was realeased only around 7 months ago and with the film being as great as it was there would naturally be antiscipation for a sequel, this however as time has gone on has a sense of what i would call sequalitise about it. This seems to always happen when a film does really well and demands for sequals take prescident over almost anything else (real preparation, great script, whether or not the film even logically needs a follow-up etc) This perpetual demand is almost always the deathknell of most franchises at some point, anyone who happens to read this post could no doubt think of one. Now don't get me wrong i'd love to see another batman film by chris nolan as badly as anyone but not before its time, we all want a great sequal to stand beside both batman begins and the dark knight to complete one of the great trilogys in cinematic history. With chris nolans strive for constant exellence and his creative team of jonah nolan and david goyer you can bet when the time comes there'll be trying to achieve just that, the dark knight will stand the test of time reguardless as great films throughout cinematic history have done and will always do. With the film being lest than a year old we should take time to savour that first before the obvious arrives maybe 3 years from now, but what we should also consider is a great director trying to introduce some much needed freshness and ORIGINALITY into the cinematic landscape. We all crave the potential for creative, inventive, takes on any given genre and the film indusry could no doubt do with some of that right now, if you think about it nolans approach to the summer blockbuster with the dark knight was very much a risk with the tone of film and the themes explored within it. It was in reflection a dark film and was very much a crime thriller not something you would originally have thought would resinate with children as well as adults but it did. It transcended the comic book genre but more importantly proved that the general movie going audiance was ready to embrace anything new as long as it was well made and the rest is history. Off the back of this success warner brothers i suspect will no doubt have green lit this original project with batman 3 in mind and it will be very interesting to see what chris nolan has come up with now that he has grown technically and creatively as an already talented director, so lets get behind this project and if he delivers yet another masterpiece with this film just imagine how the prospect of batman 3 will sound then.

I am so excited as I am a Nolan fan first, and a Batman fan second.

I'm very excited about this and I agree with what premo77 is saying.
If Inception is a mega-hit, it'll set the stage for a third Batman film.

It might be too early to tell, and it seems like Inception might be to 'genre-y' for it...

but I hope this is the type of film that also gives Chris some more awards recognition and love.

Right, and that's another thing to think about too. He might be angling this film with the hopes of receiving awards for it, possibly making it a priority during the writing and production of the film. He'll be pulling a Spielberg that way. Alternating between making movies that he, as a director wants to make, and then making films that have better chances of receiving awards. Generally, the highest grossing films a director makes are the ones that he doesn't angle towards winning awards and just wants to make the films because they'll be awesome. If, in fact, this is the case, doing this sets the stage for an excellent film following this one - possibly Batman 3.

Not to totally disagree with Alex, but just I comment. You state that directors often alternate between movies that they want to make and then movies that will win awards. I believe it was Steven Soderbergh who stated that he does big budget movies so that he can then do the movies he wants, the smaller, more personal films, which then wins awards. I like to think that most directors don't angle for awards, and I certainly believe that Mr. Nolan is far above this, but it makes sense. Look at the movies that constantly get nominated for the Academy Award, they usually always under perform at the box office, and if directors only made these types of movies then they would quickly be out of a job. That being said, I'm positive Christopher Nolan loves making the Batman films and isn't just doing it for a paycheck, but now Warner Brothers has agreed to produce both The Prestige and Inception due to Nolan's participation on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Well, actually, it sounds like you're not disagreeing with me at all.

I'm not saying the most directors alternate between filming movies they want to film and films that they try to win awards with. I was just relating Steven Spielberg's filming styles to Christopher Nolan's. In the recent past, Steven Spielberg has definitely alternated between filming personal films and films that he made trying to win awards. With the so very little information we have about Christopher Nolan's work on Inception, I'm purposing that Nolan is filming, or will film, Inception with the angle on winning awards. I think that we can all agree that The Dark Knight and Christopher Nolan's work on it got snubbed by the Oscars. I don't think that Christopher Nolan wasn't too happy about all of that and could angle this next film with the intention on winning some awards. Following this film could be Batman 3, with the perfect setup, if Inception wins some awards.

Oh, and I think Chris Nolan loves making Batman films. ;)

I'm personally glad that Mr. Nolan's taking a break from Batman because although I certainly love his take on Batman, I also love his non-Batman movies (he's far and away my favorite director). I'm excited for Inception, and when I first read the premise I immediately thought of The Cell, a film which I adore. I don't think Inception will be anything like it, though. While it's definitely too early to tell, my guess is that Inception will be something like Dark City in terms of style, but with one of Christopher Nolan's brilliant scripts powering it.
Has anyone else got any speculation as to what it's going to be like?
