He was snubbed. The Academy hates him. Yes, the other nominees are also GREAT directors (loser talk, to be honest), but with a Golden Globe and a DGA nomination every other director on this earth would be a shoo-in for a Best Director nod at the Oscars -- except for Christopher Nolan. If it happens one time, hell even two times, then yeah maybe I could accept it. But when it happens three times. It's sickening.
Incorrect. Nolan wasn't the only one who earned a DGA nomination but not an Oscar nomination in 2001 (Baz Luhrmann was the other). Not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet.

The only possible reason why they didn't give it to him is b/c the best picture category goes to the producer instead of director, and in Inception's case, Christopher Nolan was producer also, so ultimately, if Inception won, he'd get the award. However, 'best director' is about the best director, and Christopher Nolan was. Just because he could just as easily pick up the best picture award as producer, it's no reason not to give him a best director nod.

That has nothing to do with it. They didn't nominate him for Best Director because they didn't think he was one of the 5 best directors of the year. End of story.

This is an exaggeration, but in all seriousness I do think Nolan *would* have to change the way he makes films. And if it is a choice between a Nolan who makes films purely to win awards or a Nolan who makes films he wants to make then...there is no choice as far as I am concerned.

I find this entire thread somewhat baffling. It's generally accepted in the film community that the oscars are 100% politics. Look at any film editorial regarding the oscars, they talk about oscar campaigning. Why campaign if the Academy would be objective? It wouldn't, and shouldn't be necessary, but it is. And look at that, David Fincher's parading the Social Network around like mad, had it rereleased, did loads of press for it, and so on. The very fact you need to campaign your films proves its all politics. Under that context, Nolan doesn't suck up to them. He didn't do any of those rounds at all, he just did his thing as if it were any other day. When you realize people like Michael Bay get a vote, it becomes less impressive.

No, I don't think The Academy hates Nolan really, many of them are probably his colleagues and friends, what I do think is that Inception, as well as Chris and co, refused to go around hyping up their film and ranting about how great it was to anyone who would listen. I'm not knocking Fincher for it, I enjoy the hell out of his press, I'm merely pointing out the oscars as a whole are a very flawed thing, one that's governed by politics, controversy, and so on. Go back and look at the academy's choices every year, then look at the films of that year, you might be surprised who and what made the cut, and what didn't.

I feel really bad for Chris on a personal level, and its utter bullshit this happened to someone I very much wished to get it just for honors sake, but I think its borderline irrational to think a film can receive this many awards, all of which only got them because they were supervised by one creative vision from one man, who has received noms from the DGA, and is mysteriously absent from the nominees.

because even if Nolan was unanimously voted in at number 5....the fact that a few members who were Coens stans voted them in at 1 or 2, resulted in them being ranked higher than Nolan...which is pure retardation
Well it clearly wasn't just a few members that voted the Coens 1 or 2.

im just saying....

an example...

if there were 30 ppl who voted them at 1 or 2...and 70 who didnt vote them in at all

while 100 people voted nolan at 5...

then the Coens would be ranked higher in the category...which is dumb...it should be about the number of votes, not ranking

How awesome would it be if the Academy changes the system again after this year?

On the one hand, it would be awesome to show how much influence Nolan has. On the other, 10 nominees are just too many IMO.
