Western or Horror?

I would love to see a Nolan western. Whenever I think of a Western by Nolan, I literally imagine Nolan on a horse in cowboy gear with Cillian Murphy.

Western or Horror?

Horror and Western are both very limited genres with a lot of principles. I wish he would choose the type of film making which would bring him more freedom to do what he wants.

I mean someone like Tarantino always can make interesting films in any genre because he always break the rules and invent something new. What I love about Tarantino is his directing abilities and how powerful he is when it comes to writing dialogues. So I'm still excited a lot about Django Unchained. And I also like to see him try every genre. But not Nolan, because his significance is his storytelling abilities and there are certain genres like Western that would put a lot of limits on your freedom of telling a story.

It's possible some of you misunderstand me. So I have to say that I love both Western and Horror, I have a lot of favorite films in those genres and there is a possibility that Nolan would go for a Western or a Horror and makes a great film. All I'm saying is it's tricky. There are not a lot that have been left to say in those genres.

Take a look at some of the best Westerns that has been made in the last 10 years.

1. True Grit (2010): Almost a great film but it would've been a step back for Nolan if he wanted to make it. You know why because there is absolutely nothing new about its story. It's not cliche at all but there are a lot of similar patterns in other western films that we've already seen.

2. 3:10 to Yuma (2007): A very good film with a very good story, same case as True Grit.

3. AOJJ (2007): This along with NCFOM are probably the best westerns of the last decade but its story is even on a lower level than the previous two. The whole importance of this film is the amazing job of Dominik in directing the film in a very poetic way which has made it this brilliant.

4. Brokeback Mountain (2005): Amazing film because it has a powerful emotional core. The story is very limited. (Doesn't mean it's not a very good story)

5. No Country for Old Men (2007): Pure cinema. This is as great as it is because of how Coens used the language of cinema to tell their stories and also some of the details of the script. Not because of the story itself. That story could've also belong to a B movie from 80s.

Western or Horror?

Virgo just saved me time. I don't want him to put any limitations on the type of story he wants to tell. Almost every film he's made he's broken genre limitations and conventions on multiple, and sometimes unexpected, fronts.

I could easily see him doing horror as that's an easily adaptable format to any number of genres of storytelling types. Western? Not so much.

Western seems foreign to almost all of his sensibilities as a storyteller and as a filmmaker.

I agree that the Horror genre would be more aptly suited to his current filmographic sensibilities as they're currently defined. However, I think that the challenge and enigmatic reconstruction of both the genre and his own preconceptions of how he as a filmmaker functions makes Western the more interesting choice. I always look for films and filmmakers to push themselves and explore new facets of their skills and talents. Horror (though I don't doubt he could craft an amazing and evocative film) seems too similar to his current genres to permit this stretch and growth. Given, the exploratory approach is also riskier and has more potential to falter but I still think it's the more interesting of the two choices.

When it comes to films, I have always been a fan of genres and their boundaries. Their tropes and traditions. It's totally cool for a director to break free of those limitations but I do like genres when associated with films- in music it just gets a bit annoying (though I feel it's kind of necessary).

I'm sure many (including myself) don't care as long as he's making movies. But his thrillers are always genuinely inventive and brilliant, and a billion times better than other thrillers.

It's a horror, you can't just make up your own genre for it.

Wikipedia wrote:Horror films are a film genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's most primal fears.

Yes it does have horror elements, but I didn't necessary get a 'negative' emotional reaction. Thriller is a broader term, and fits this movie easier than horror. Yes it has Zombies, but this is a dead-set thriller.

I'm fine with either (it's nolan) but I honestly can't see Nolan doing a straight horror. Whereas Western seems more a fit for him (because he's only confined within the setting and general tone, that's it)

Western or Horror?

I seriously think he should do a romantic comedy, a classic story with nolan's style, just a touch: boy meets girl, they fall in love, they get married, they live happy ever after - and then the wife dies :P

No, just kidding. I think he could do great deconstructing both genres (playing with their conventions, with its rules, without really breaking them or the experience), but I was hoping for a more Sci-Fi oriented premise, a dystopian future-thriller.

Or he could tell a horror/western story from the point of view of less typical characters, for example analyzing the psychology of its villains.
