Well it makes sense ... I mean Nolan's Batman fame led him to do Inception, which he had also shelved 10 years ago. If he realizes that he can do Inception, maybe he's realized that he wants to do Mr. Hughes.

That's what I'm thinking. Inception and Hughes are long-shelved passion projects for Nolan. Batman allowed him to make Inception and it will allow him to make the Hughes project.

I also have to disagree with the idea that it's random speculation. NY Magazine is a respected publication. They wouldn't have printed it unless they had legit sources IMHO.

Here's an Interview with Jim Carrey on Charlie Rose in 2001. At 38:25, He expresses his excitement with having a chance to work with Chris Nolan:

I really hope - if Nolan does this- that he does stick with Jim Carrey. Carrey doesn't look a day older than he does here. And he is an awesome choice and a tremendous actor; I really hope Nolan gives him a chance to shine.

Aw man that makes me wish Jim Carrey would eventually be in a Nolan film. I think if he's still interested, he could still do Hughes, since he is much older now. I LOVE Leo Dicap but he was too young at the time for Howard Hughes.

I really think comedians most of the time make the best actors, like Carrey or Robin Williams.

A bit late, but I just saw someone posting this news at the IMDb forums. Of course people there are already saying Nolan only wants to make the movie to get an Oscar... geez, people are so narrow-minded  Sure, he'll have a much better shot at getting a nomination, let alone winning the award with a biopic than with a comic book movie but if he says it's the best script he has ever written, it's not surprising he really wants to get it made, and not strictly for awards purposes (Nolan is no Harvey Weinstein).
I'm not sure what to think of it yet, I wouldn't say I'm very excited as I'm not all that interested in Howard Hughes but surely Nolan would make a great movie, no doubt about that. I liked The Aviator (especially Leo's performance), although I consider it one of Scorsese's weakests so it's definitely not impossible to make a movie better than that... I'm just not sure I want to see one.

Nolan's speciality has always been in the noir thriller genre. Even the Batman movies have noirish elements in them. Looking at what Scorsese has brought to THE AVIATOR, a man slowly going out of his mind, the new Howard Hughes film may very well be within Nolan's territory after all. How much poetic license Nolan is going to take is the real question. Nolan seems to have no interest in an objective non-fiction storytelling. All his movie characters are stubbornly inside their own heads/minds. INCEPTION is the most extreme example of this.

I'm really excited for this, and I hope Nolan does get to do this. And Jim Carey is a great actor and should definetly work with Nolan

Nolan doesn't make films for awards he makes them because he wants to make them from what I can gather.

He took charge of the Batman franchise when it was left in a state and laughable if anything. So he doesn't go into a film like some pretentious pillock trying to make a film soley for awards.

Also like some on here, I'm more excited for this film than TDKR as it lets Nolan go back to making his best films in the vein of his earlier years and he also states it's the best thing he's ever written for crying it loud. it
I was hoping he wouldn't go back to Batman franchise after The Dark Knight as to me it's fine where he's left, and could leave it to someone like Rian Johnson, Duncan Jones or Darren Aronofsky etc to make the next one, similar to what Cameron did with Strange Days with Karthryn Bigelow.

I also think the Batman films are ridiculously overrated myself and Mr. Hughes is far more interesting to me. The Aviator was great and I loved it but only focused from his Hell's Angels film to the Hercules taking off. His whole life was fascinating from birth to death which Nolan also stated was the difference from his and the Aviator.

This is great news, except that I wold prefer to have Robert Downy Jr. play Hughes than Jim Carrey. Nevertheless, I am really excited to see how Nolan is going to tackle this genre. :D
