Yeah I think so too, as he said that he wants to wait 10 years after The Aviator, 2014 would be exactly a decade later. I think The Aviator would be considered old enough by then anyway.

I'm still trying to figure out what he sees in this. It seems oddly... straightforward?

Everyone has their passion/dream project.

The chance to chronicle a real person's life and doing a sort of rise-and-fall biopic, I'm sure is appealing to a lot of filmmakers.

Nolan has already promised it will be a very unusual movie. Biopics can be quite boring (and Oscar-baity) but I'm fully convinced Nolan would make something really special with that genre.

Well as Carrey said Nolan's tendency towards untraditional story structure and chronology is something that could very well suit this project perfectly. Plus Hughes' life and health have been shattered irreversibly on so many occasions that a 'shattered chronology' feels even better as an idea. Plus Hughes has been a daring director, was obsessive-compulsive and has been the attention of directors like Welles, who are also magicians, and of master conmen (see F for Fake).

As much as I want him to do this... I'd love another large scale film.

I want a smaller scale after TDKR but I still want him to obviously make more larger scale films later in the future.
