He's not nearly as British as most people make him out to be. His mom was American and he spent his childhood between America and Britain. And of course after graduating from university in the UK he moved here to America permanently to become a director. So in fact he's more American than he is British (he's a US citizen as well as retaining British citizenship) But I guess his mostly British accent has encouraged people into thinking he's entirely British.
Funnily enough he's only ever made one British film and that was Following where he had to finance the picture with his own cash. Interestingly in an old interview Nolan attacked the snobbery of the British film industry when talking about how he couldn't get funding for Following and how he never hesitated leaving the UK for the US. Also his sensibility when approaching films is more stylistically American than British.
