Archiving/Deleting/Cleaning up the NF Forums

Hiya! With DUNKIRK officially in production, and excitement around the film growing, we're looking to spruce up the forums a bit.

We're taking a deeper look into the increasing spam, but our main concern is with the size and organization of the forums itself.

Besides having inactive areas and threads, the overall size of the database is taxing the server and is what we believe to be the cause of the slowness and intermittent downtime we've been increasingly experiencing.

So what can we do?

• We're looking into new CAPTCHA/spam filters
• We're thinking about consolidating/eliminating the Syncopy Films section (MoS/Transcendence)
• We want to hear from you about deleting/archiving older posts

What do we want to know?
• What do you want to see happen to the Syncopy Films section (MoS/Transcendence)?
.......a) We're thinking about consolidating major threads and moving them to the Entertainment section
.......b) Other threads we're thinking of deleting or archiving altogether.
.......c) Which should stay and which should go?
• When deleting/archiving old threads in general, how far back do you think we can/should go?
.......a) It's probably easiest to say "threads over X years old" or "threads with less than X amount of posts"

There may be other cool and cosmetic changes coming, so let us know what you'd like to see and we'll consider it ;)

-not having to delete the s in https for embedding youtube videos would be neat
-embedding vimeo vids would be neat
-gif avys would be SUPER FUCKIN NEAT
-as much as i adore MoS and Transcendence i understand they take up space and i'll simply have to come to terms with their absence
-archive threads that have been inactive for 3 years (as fun as bumping old threads is)

Get rid of the Syncopy sub forum

Add sigs back

Add gif avys back (if possible)

What Keith said about the YouTube embed

Definitely kill Syncopy sub forum.

We should sort through all locked threads as well.
I knew those damn appreciation threads would bite us in the ass lol.

Edit: and could we please get someone to help me clean up every now and then yo?
yeah I said it!

- Add/fix/optimize an in-forum search function
- Twitter embeds
- Lose the fan-art/media section, there's plenty of it in the individual movie forums and aspiring filmmakers. Also the film analysis section
- Deport Cilogy, he has served his purpose, it's my time now

I agree with all the above suggestions. Sigs and gif avys would be pretty neat indeed. The only thing I'd add is that there's need for more moderation. George, Eternalist and Erik are never here and yet they're still mods and Blair hasn't been posting for a couple of months, for some reason. There's literally only one mod and that should be fixed, IMO.

1. See if you can actually delete the films themselves as well.

2. I would also appreciate better connectivity or optimization or whatever word you kewl kidz use with Twitter and You Tube. We post a lot of stuff from those two sites especially, it would be great if we had the ability to embed shit from there more easily.

3. If it's time for some changes, I'd also love for someone to break Alex out of what I presume is some sort of elaborate hamster wheel-like digital productivity prison at Apple and make the site more mobile device friendly. I spend most of my time on this site through my phone or tablet, it would be neat if they got along better with NF. First world problem, I know, but it's tedious otherwise.

4. Get rid of all those stupid old contest and challenge threads. Get rid of all the bullshit locked threads that we're all ashamed to have participated in. Go as far back as you can. Really dig that proverbial gloved hand up the proverbial anus of NF and rinse out all the proverbial excrement. Get rid of shit like this. Like ... what even?

5. I really don't see why enabling sigs and gif avys would be such a big issue. I visit multiple forums that have both and really don't understand how it would affect things that much. It's not like we have a shitload of sidebars and stuff all over the site that would cause site functionality to drop so drastically. Or just get a better server or add more RAM to your GIGS or whatever.

6. Get rid of all of my random threads.

7. Get rid of me.

Boom! Tabula rasa.

A notification feature when someone replies to your comment would make for better UX imo.

also putting a search button would be great. http://www.nolanfans.com/forums/search.php

1. What is the size of database and is it optimized?

2. Approve first 5 posts by mods.

3. Thread create limit should be minimum 10 posts.

4. Archive thread after 1 year of inactivity.

5. Embed HTML5 videos.

6. Archive Syncopy Subforum.
