It fascinates me, that even now what is really concerning is humankind losing a certain type of meal rather than living creatures completely vanishing from the face of the earth.

Society and its utterly broken moral compass.

In a Colony of 40,000, Just Two Penguin Chicks Survived This Year
The birds, all of a species known as the common murre, appear to have starved to death, federal wildlife officials say, suggesting disruptions to the supply of herring and other fish that make up the birds' diet. A survey by wildlife officials over the weekend counted more than 8000 dead murres on the shores of one beach near Whittier, about 100 kilometres south-east of Anchorage. Local news video showed bodies of the black-and-white birds scattered on the beach and floating in the water offshore.

What they say about how the apocalypse doesn't psychologically affect the depressed people is just bullshit. I can now attest to that. It only works that way if you used to look at the world as a collection of nice things for your own amusement and not an abundance of wonder, beauty and resources that needs to be preserved.

‘Climate apartheid’: UN expert says human rights may not survive
The world is increasingly at risk of “climate apartheid”, where the rich pay to escape heat and hunger caused by the escalating climate crisis while the rest of the world suffers, a report from a UN human rights expert has said.
The Insanity in Oregon Is a Glimpse of Our Very Dark Future
It begins with a not-at-all-unusual squabble between the Republicans in the Oregon legislature and the Democratic Governor, Kate Brown. At issue is a huge bill aimed at dealing with the climate crisis. On Thursday, every Republican member of the Oregon state senate took a powder, denying Brown and the Democrats a quorum and effectively killing the bill.
G20 countries triple coal power subsidies despite climate crisis
The figures, published in a report by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and others, show that Japan is one of the biggest financial supporters of coal, despite the prime minister, Shinzo Abe, having said in September: “Climate change can be life-threatening to all generations … We must take more robust actions and reduce the use of fossil fuels.” The annual G20 meeting begins in Japan on Friday.
'Hell is coming': week-long heatwave begins across Europe
Meteorologists said temperatures would reach or even exceed 40C from Spain to Switzerland as hot air was sucked up from the Sahara by the combination of a storm stalling over the Atlantic and high pressure over central Europe.
The warming Arctic permafrost may be releasing more nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas, than previously thought
But a paper published this month in the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics shows that nitrous oxide emissions from thawing Alaskan permafrost are about 12 times higher than previously assumed. Since N2O traps heat nearly 300 times more efficiently than carbon dioxide does, this revelation could mean that the Arctic — and the global climate — are in more danger than we thought.
Mike Pence's unbelievable answer on whether climate change is a threat
Sometimes you have to read something to believe it. Vice President Mike Pence's pretzel-twisting when asked by CNN's Jake Tapper whether climate change is a threat to the United States is one of those times.
Climate report could be dropped from UN talks after 'gentleman's agreement' made under Saudi pressure
A major study on how to limit global warming could be dropped from formal UN climate talks in Bonn this week after a “gentlemen’s agreement” was made under pressure from Saudi Arabia.
U.S. MILITARY PRODUCES MORE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS THAN UP TO 140 COUNTRIES
The U.S. military's carbon bootprint is enormous. Like corporate supply chains, it relies upon an extensive global network of container ships, trucks and cargo planes to supply its operations with everything from bombs to humanitarian aid and hydrocarbon fuels. Our new study calculated the contribution of this vast infrastructure to climate change.
The Fossil Fuel Industry Is Quietly Undermining Global Climate Talks
Fossil fuel industry giants such as ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell are maintaining an outsized presence at global climate discussions, working to undermine scientific consensus and slow policy progress, according to findings released Wednesday by an environmental monitoring organization.
Some good news, too:

Solar Energy Has Record Start to 2019
Despite tariffs and federal government support for fossil fuels, the solar industry had a record first quarter of 2019 according to the Solar Market Insight Report 2019 Q2 from SEIA and Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables. The U.S. installed 2,674 megawatts (MW) of solar, up 10% from a year ago.
Fossil fuels produce less than half of UK electricity for first time
This year will be the first that fossil fuels make up less than half of the electricity generated, according to National Grid, following a dramatic decline in coal-fired power and rising renewable and low-carbon energy.

Instead, UK homes and businesses will rely more on “cleaner” electricity generated by wind farms, solar panels, hydro power and nuclear power reactors.
Hundreds Storm Police Lines to Shut Down Massive Coal Mine in Germany
"This is not only about coal power," said one Ende Gelände spokesperson. "This is about changing a destructive system that is based on the quest for infinite economic growth and exploitation. We are fighting for a future in which people count more than profits."
Bill Gates and Big Oil back this company that’s trying to solve climate change by sucking CO2 out of the air
n Squamish, British Columbia, there’s a company that wants to stop climate change by sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

It’s called Carbon Engineering, and it uses a combination of giant fans and complex chemical processes to remove carbon dioxide from the air in a procedure known as Direct Air Capture.

Direct Air Capture isn’t new, but Carbon Engineering says its technology has advanced enough for it to finally make financial sense.
Jay Inslee Declares War On Fossil Fuels With Plan To Make Industry Pay For Climate Change
Democratic presidential candidate Jay Inslee already laid out plans to shut down all coal plants by 2030, spur a clean-energy construction boom and target climate change deniers overseas with anti-corruption laws.

Now the Washington governor, whose White House bid is entirely centered on climate change, is out with a new proposal to end federal support for fossil fuel production and make the industry pay for some of the damages emissions are causing.

i just got that the thread title is two separate statements!

Yes, we are absolutely fucked. Even if we make it through alive, which no doubt we will, there will always be significant damage to the environment as there already has been. In regards to United States politics, Republicans are absolutely clueless. Democrats pretend to be clued-in but only to the extent that they'll rejoin agreements that Trump broke. Other than that, they care more about stopping mass shootings than the actual planet itself which, if not cooled, will metaphorically go on its own mass shooting to trump all mass shootings. Maybe one or two candidates said the climate was their biggest or first issue of their agenda.
