I think it's crazy Kurosawa's best composed film isn't mentioned at all (High and Low), but you get the idea. He's come closer than any to surpassing Kubrick as my favorite filmmaker, and they're closer than I sometimes enjoy admitting. Kubrick's work was more abstract and was something someone like Bazin might call neo-cinema or post-cinema. In many ways, I feel as though Kurosawa is simply the best filmmaker in the history of cinema, by virtue of making the opposite of what Kubrick did. That is, by making movie-movies. In that realm, there is no better.
