Hollywood Reporter pans it.

Screen Daily thinks it's meh.

Variety loved it.

I have to say DON JOHN'S ADDICTION is a far better study of sex addiction than SHAME. #Sundance13

Don Jon's Addiction -- more like (500) Days of Hummers. (But, yes, the funniest movie I've seen at the festival so far.) #sundance

DON JON'S ADDICTION is an impressive debut from JGL. Stymied gender politics aside, it's a rather smart + funny film #Sundance

James Robinson ‏@jalrobinson
Don Jon's Addiction succeeds I think because it manages to be a rom com that successfully attacks against objectification #Sundance

I thought Don Jon's was a very complex love story that teaches its audience about intimacy. A VERY impressive directorial debut for JGL...

Jeff Sneider ‏@TheInSneider
An entire generation of men has grown up watching violent Internet porn that objectifies women, so we don't know how to act when we do care.

Jeff Sneider ‏@TheInSneider
Like EVERY guy, I enjoy porn, but my g/f is constantly reminding me she hates the word "tits," which the Internet has made part of my vocab.

Jeff Sneider ‏@TheInSneider
I think it's a serious issue a lot of guys struggle with. It's fine to enjoy porn, but obv. there's a problem when U get to Don Jon's level.

Jeff Sneider ‏@TheInSneider
I was just surprised by how well JGL examined that issue. It was kind of courageous & while I didn't cry, I did get emotional towards end.

Jeff Sneider ‏@TheInSneider
JGL & ScarJo were spot-on as Jersey guido-types & supp. cast was perfect from top to bottom, incl. Tony Danza, Rob Brown and Glenne Headly.

Jeff Sneider ‏@TheInSneider
It was funny in the right places & dramatic in the right places, mostly thx to Julianne Moore who helps Joe find the right tone in 3rd act.

Jeff Sneider ‏@TheInSneider
JGL has a great handle on the material & finds the right balance to make it commercial. Should be interesting to see who picks it up...

Jeff Sneider ‏@TheInSneider
I'd rather not speculate at this point, but I think there are some surprising parties interested...

And Tatum too right? When did this happen?
There is a scene in the movie when Joe and Scarlett's character go to the movies to see a shitty rom com and Hathaway and Tatum are the leads.
“I wanted to tell a love story,” he said after the tail credits scrolled across the giant screen.

“But in my observation, what gets in the way of love is people objectifying each other. People put labels on each other and have a checklist of expectations. Rather than seeing what makes them a unique human being, it’s like, well, what are her tits like, what is her ass like?”

It’s no different for women, either, he said: They generally look at the man as a source of income and status.

“I wanted to write a story about that,” said the veteran actor who appeared as an alien in 3rd Rock from the Sun, as well as a hit man in the recent Looper.

“In fact, I was thinking about it in terms of movies before I thought of it in terms of porn: The way that people learn what they are supposed to like from Hollywood romance,” he said.

“And then I thought of Don Juan and the ladies’ man who is addicted to porn, because the symbol of a guy sitting there watching pornography seemed to me, well that’s objectification right there. There is no connection between that guy and that woman, and that’s where it started.”

Gordon-Levitt said the addiction is an extension of objectification. “I think people objectify lots of things, whether it’s about connecting with another person, friends and family, your spirituality, or lot of things: Rather than really connecting with it, people turn it into an object they can consume, and that’s what this movie is about.”

One of my most anticipated this year. So pleasantly surprised by the reports that JoGoLevitt chose to depict the world through stylized exaggerations and not naturalistic depictions.

Rian Johnson on Don Jon's Addiction:
If you’ll forgive me, I’m going to gush a little about my friend Joe’s movie Don Jon’s Addiction.

Don Jon’s Addiction is about a young man in New Jersey whose addiction to internet porn is holding him back from having real relationships. Joe could have done this as a naturalistic character study, with underplayed performances and subdued non-committal style, and I’m sure it would have been great.

But Joe did the exact opposite. Don Jon is hyper-stylized not just in the easy-to-spot realm of visual style and execution, but in the sneakier and more abrasive/subversive arena of characters, world and conceptual construction. It’s not a realistic depiction of sex, or male/female relations, or Jersey culture, or family dynamics, and trying to read it as any of these things will lead to the equivalent of critiquing skillful caricature as failed portraiture. Its characters are all exaggerated, magnifying facets of a meticulously constructed object, and the sum of its parts is a meditation not on a young man’s struggle with porn or even his emotional maturation, but on the myriad screens we all use as proxies for intimacy with other human beings. That’s pretty vital stuff.

Oh, and it’s also funny as hell and so much fun to watch. You guys are going to love it. I couldn’t be prouder of Joe, and I can’t wait for everyone to see his ambitious, brave and terrific movie.
Although, to be honest, I didn't expect Johnson to say anything else with him being BFF with JGL and all.
