Controversial yes... since Lolita, 2001, Clockwork, Barry Lyndon, The Shining... that's already five.
I guess I really enjoyed it. I still never seen Lolita (or Fear and Desire I guess) but it is my favorite early Kubrick. Usually people choose Paths of Glory as their favorite early Kubrick, I really liked that one too but I would have to put it second. I think The Killing is probably his most perfect pre Strangelove and it really best foreshadows the perfectionism he embraced later. It's also just really fun, and just really cool.
And Tarantino wasn't kidding when he said Reservior Dogs was influenced by it.
My ranking is probably like this
2001
Dr. Strangelove
The Shining
The Killing
A Clockwork Orange
Even first time watching it, I found it to be a great and underappreciated film. In my most recent viewing however I was totally convinced that Joe Wright's Anna Karenina is a masterpiece, though one with a big misstep, Aaron Johnson was ridiculously miscast. Wright could have gone with Pattinson or Cavill or perhaps Claflin and I believe the result would have been much better. Nothing against the actor himself, he was just not fit for that particular role is all.£
