Shakespeare in Love is actually pretty impressive. It's just that the competition was stacked with masterpieces.

If I were to rank the BP winners I've seen from best to worst, I'd go thusly...

The Godfather Part II
Lawrence of Arabia
Casablanca
Unforgiven
Amadeus
The Godfather
Gone With the Wind
All About Eve
On the Waterfront
The French Connection
Gandhi
All Quiet on the Western Front
Hamlet
Rain Man
My Fair Lady
Dances With Wolves
West Side Story
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Rebecca
In the Heat of the Night
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
No Country for Old Men
The Silence of the Lambs
It Happened One Night
Mrs. Miniver
Platoon
The Best Years of Our Lives
Ben-Hur
Schindler's List
Going My Way
Patton
A Man for All Seasons
Ordinary People
The Departed
Wings
Midnight Cowboy
The Apartment
Marty
Annie Hall
Kramer vs. Kramer
The Hurt Locker
The Sound of Music
How Green was My Valley
The Life of Emile Zola
Titanic
Million Dollar Baby
Terms of Endearment
Mutiny on the Bounty
Shakespeare in Love
The King's Speech
Forrest Gump
Grand Hotel
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Tom Jones
From Here to Eternity
Crash
An American in Paris
Gentleman's Agreement
Slumdog Millionaire
American Beauty
The Artist
The Last Emperor
The Lost Weekend
You Can't Take it With You
Rocky
Chicago
The Broadway Melody
The Sting
Driving Miss Daisy
Chariots of Fire
The Great Ziegfeld
All the King's Men
Oliver!
Braveheart
The Deer Hunter
Gladiator
The English Patient (JUST DIE ALREADY)
The Greatest Show on Earth
A Beautiful Mind
Gigi
Around the World in 80 Days
Out of Africa

Here's the controversial thing: I actually think a good portion, all things considered, are films I'd call "good". The threshold for "bad" in that list is Gladiator for me.

Interesting list...what stands out to me however is your preference for Titanic over such films as Lord of the Rings: ROTK and American Beauty. I think Titanic is one of the more undeserving Best Picture winners.

I disliked Titanic with moderate intensity. Seriously, that year was supposed to be for L.A Confidential.

Return of the King is ultimately too much of a slave to other films, and the full heft of it isn't as apparent when watched individually (whereas The Godfather Part II can function entirely on its own). American Beauty is, I think, a rather poorly written film where everyone says EXACTLY what they're thinking all the time. It's beautifully shot, but I've never been a fan of it, despite being a fan of Mendes.

Titanic isn't particularly well-written either, it is an exceptionally well put-together, full blooded film experience, and the idea of a disaster film being lavishly rendered, with even the trash that Irwin Allen would recognise as trash being gilded and served up on a purple cushion is a rather appealing idea for me. I've only ever watched it once, on a tiny TV screen, but it's one of the few times I've seen a film at home and the full heft of it as a cinematic experience has come through. I think the only thing Cameron has done that's better is the original Terminator.

I'm guessing you're not a Tarantino fan then, considering his films are all about the characters explaining exactly what they're thinking and feeling.

V for Vendetta is fantastic film in general and a severely underrated superhero film. It's also greater than every Marvel film ever made (maybe a tie with X2, but I'd have to think about it more).
