Wrath of the Titans (2012) (2D Showing)
5/10
I was one of the few who had a modestly good time with the first. It was far from perfect, but I left the theatre feeling pretty good, and it served as a good second viewing on Blu-ray. This sequel was obviously going to happen, and I was on board with it, because it did have some appeal to me, as the first one did its job in providing me with an hour-and-a-bit worth of entertainment. But, this just failed to keep up, resulting in a bland and boring experience. I'll try and keep this short, but I really want to express my views, and instead of ranting, I'll post my points again, starting with the bad points;
1.) The story is almost non-existent. It's very straight forward, very narrow, and very predictable. The way most things is structured is similar to
Clash of the Titans, except for some outcomes, and the change in creatures.
2.) Aside from Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, the cast is extremely boring, and at times pointless. They approach their roles typically, and Worthington made me want to be sick in my mouth.
3.) The CGI seemed like some big demo-reel. It wasn't at all terrible, as such, and it was an improvement over the first, but it felt dated and familiar, of which is the problem with most big release films nowadays. Not enough attention, not enough detail, not enough time invested in perfecting.
4.) There was pretty much zero character development, and that didn't go down well with the bland and weary plot.
5.) The action isn't all bad. It's easy to understand what's going on, and it's actually directed, lighted, and framed very well, which was surprising. Angles were consistent and were edited relatively well. I'd say, though, the CGI, the acting, and the turn of events during action scenes left a lot to be desired in the end, which brought much of it down.
6.) The cinematography is actually pretty great. Now, I know people will disagree with me (those who actually know what they are talking about, as do I 95% of the time), but regarding the tone, the feel, it complimented everything well, and I was happy with it. Surprising, really.
You know, it's a fun movie at times, if you enjoy watching men in dodgy costumes battle stiff computer images. I think it deserves your attention, if you can hold out for some of the technical advantages. The action scenes are very good (aside from the problems appointed above), constructed and directed well. However, direction can't be appointed to any other scenes, which were fuelled with bland, boring acting, and a story that could have been revised and improved via a ten-year old.
That's that.
