What exactly is he doing?

He's sending his whole body upwards in a line formed by the aligning of his torso and fingers. It's as if the finger tips are where his center of gravity is and they lead every movement. Look at his body language, the curve of his body makes it look like the fingers are pulling the rest of the body upwards as if every point on the body is strung to his fingers. Depp is a hardcore Chekhov actor and working with character centers is one of his suggested approaches to characterization

How you deduced that from one picture is beyond me, I think you're over-analyzing it.

If it were a video I would understand and I would probably agree, but a still from the film tells you less about what informs a performance than actual video material. Granted, we know that Depp is a physical performer.

Hmm... very interesting observation. It could be just a coincidence (As Cilogy says), or it may be deliberate. I'm hoping you're right, because that shows a hell of a lot of dedication.
