A stuntman was killed on the Bulgarian set of The Expendables 2 on Thursday during a stunt involving an explosion, which also left the second stunt performer involved in critical condition at a local hospital.

The scene was part of second unit filming and did not involve director Simon West or star Sylvester Stallone, who were filming first unit miles away, according to Deadline.

"It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident," said producers Nu Image/Millennium Films in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident."

Local police have launched an investigation.
