They've been working on this porject for a long time. The book was actually introduced to Wachowski's by Natalie Portman, who was supposed to be in the film. Wachowskis loved the book as much as Natalie did, but unfortunately Natalie was already pregnant when Wachowskis and Tom began shooting the film.
