HBO's Game of Thrones

Post kanjisheik December 3, 2010, 2:17 pm

Game of Thrones is HBO’s upcoming television adaptation of the bestselling and critically acclaimed fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R R Martin. In Jan. 2007, HBO purchased the rights and since then the show runners, David Benioff and Dan (D.B.) Weiss, have been working with HBO to adapt the books for television. They have also been consulting with the author to ensure the TV series remains as true to the books as possible. The plan is to adapt each book to a season. The first season consists of 10 episodes. HBO has targeted the series for a spring 2011 air date, possibly as early as March. The current informed guesses are putting the premiere at the end of March or beginning of April.

IMHO, A Song Of Ice And Fire is the greatest fantasy series of all time. Compared to this, the Lord of the Rings is a mere fairytale. And HBO is just perfect for adapting this, due to the considerably violent and adult nature of the books. If done well, this could be just as critically acclaimed as Rome and Deadwood, and perhaps more commercially successful than both, because it comes with an huuuge fanbase, just like True Blood. IIRC, HBO began marketing it as "Middle Earth meets the Sopranos". That's a pretty accurate slogan! :D

About the Books -
A Song of Ice and Fire is an ongoing fantasy series by American author George R. R. Martin. Dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine, GRRM has seen his series grow in popularity with each book. The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily upon a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses other races are introduced, such as the cold and menacing Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both races thought to be extinct by the people of the story. There are three principal storylines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros between several competing families; the rising threat of the Others who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years previously, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, all three storylines become increasingly interwoven and dependent on each other.
The thing that makes these novels unique among fantasy is their gritty realism. Heroes can fall, villains can triumph, those you thought were good can turn out to be evil, those you thought evil can turn out to be good. And while there are magical and fantastical elements present in the series, they are rare and regarded as fairy tales by most characters. The series is expected to last seven books, four of which have already been published. The author is currently writing the fifth book and hopes to complete it soon.

Here is a pretty awesome fanmade poster for GoT. This is quite old and the actress on the extreme right was recasted recently, so it's not completely accurate. But it still looks pretty damn cool, IMHO! :ugeek:

P.S - The release date has also been pushed back to May/April 2011.

And it'll be a Tyrion heavy season if it follows the book. If I remember correctly he had quite a substantial part in Clash of Kings. And the more Tyrion the better

this looks like it could be another winner for HBO man they always put out a great product. When you watch HBO your not watching TV that is for sure.

@ RoboAmish - Dinklage was the perfect Tyrion we'd all wanted. He should knock it out of the park! :-)

My expectations for this show are sky-high right now. It's easily my most anticipated tv show of all time. Can't frakking wait till April!

I dunno if they will be able to match the sheer brilliance of GRRM's books, but if the episodes are even half as good, Game of Thrones should be a badass tv show. The most badass tv show of all time! ;)
