Luca Guadagnino to Direct Female-Led 'Lord of the Flies' for Warner Bros.
Guadagnino is in talks to direct the feature from a script by Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet — the screenwriters behind titles like Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy and Tomb Raider.

William Golding's Lord of the Flies centers on a group of young, male boarding school students that end up stranded on an island and devolve into pre-pubescent savages over the course of the novel.

Guadagnino, Perlman and Robertson-Dworet will be taking over for Scott McGehee and David Siegel, who were previously set to write and direct the studio's take on the classic. When the project was first announced two years ago it faced backlash online being that the studio had tapped a male writing-directing team for what would be a female-led project.

Wow. One of my favorite books. And I loved Suspiria. I will most likely not be seeing this, if it ever gets made, which it probably won’t.

This is definitely how it should be tbh. Much of the LOTF commentary reflects directly on toxic masculinity, competition, religion, loyalties for power, etc.

To quote George Carlin - “He - and if there is a God, I am convinced he is a he, because no woman could or would ever fuck things up this badly.”

I might be the sole dissenting voice here, but exploring the effects of toxic masculinity on women and womanhood could’ve been an interesting topic to do in a lord of the flies-esque type of setting, if it wasn’t to be treated as a simplistic “change up the genders and do nothing else” kind of film with “diversity” being the only thing going for it.

The thing is, I don’t really dig those quotes like the one from Carlin posted a few posts back. I think they don’t really do much for the feminist cause. Women aren’t flawless, and I think a narrative where we’re seen as somehow incapable of destruction and poor decision making is just as harmful as assuming women are childlike creatures who amount to nothing without a man nearby. And while toxicity obviously manifests differently in them (and a lot of it is a by-product from patriarchal societal norms, toxic masculinity etc.), toxicity amongst women is absolutely real, and worthy to be dissected in a non-misogynistic manner. I can guarantee you, if a bunch of girls/women were trapped in a Lord of the Flies setting, shit would go down fast.

Ultimately, I think people should not go out of their ways rewriting classic novels, and use the inspo from the material to create originals instead. So the female-led LOTF wouldn’t make sense as much as it maybe would either.
