Gonna venture a guess and say that they vote for the ones where you can't tell it's VFX? like with Avengers and SW we know it's VFX but then with 1917 we learn what was VFX and what wasn't and it's like "oh cool."

How did 1917 win visual effects over Avengers or Star Wars??? Special effects sure, but the later two were nothing but visual effects. Shows that academy voters don't really pay attention or think things through...
quality over quantity perhaps, Star wars and Endgame both look more like animated films rather than films with visual effects.

Yea, I think a lot of Oscar voters don't want to vote for big vfx blockbuster, especially from the Disney Machine. But the fx is still really good from Avengers for the most part.

There is plenty of stuff in Star Wars/Avengers too where you can't tell it's VFX. And with the rest, do we know it's VFX because it looks bad or because there's no way these things are real?

Yeah but The Jungle Book won VFX a couple of years ago, so...
(And the shot in 1917 where McKay jumps into the water looked pretty distracting tbh)
