The race will probably be crowded enough, I don't think RDJ will get an Oscar nomination.

I mean, Phoenix, Jordan, Driver, perhaps Hopkins, Dafoe? Maybe Bale? it is not known
RDJ would likely be campaigning in the supporting category. Going against the likes of Brad Pitt, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Pacino, and likely Tom Hanks to name a few.

Are we living in a post "Oscar Bait" world?

The last few years most major movies in contention defy conventional categorization, this year most of all. That may be partly a consequence of 2019 being a weak year for movies.

is it weaker than 2018?

2018 was an amazing year for movies imo, just most of them weren't oscar-y movies.

I think we'll simply change the definition of Oscar Bait. The Academy has been inviting a larger and more diverse group of members in recent years, so the type of movies which were once surefire are not so guaranteed anymore. It'll still take a few more years to certify what type of movies these new members gravitate to.

TIFF's People Choice Awards

1. Jojo Rabbit
2. Marriage Story
3. Parasite

Marriage Story is frontrunner in my honest opinion.

Odd thing is that in the past two years, Golden Lion and TIFF-PCA winners ended up being the two front runners for the BP award at the Oscars.

as mentioned above, weird year. Marriage Story isn't the kind of movie to typically be best picture.

I haven't seen it obviously, but usually there has to be an "angle" for it to win, and's just a ridiculously well done marriage / divorce drama from what I hear.

And yet, OUATIH is still running first according to many oscar pundits, although they'd be the first to tell you their worthiness at oscar speculation diminishes as academy votership expands drastically and this year the whole oscar race is completely different from previous years as the ceremony moved up so much.

orrrrr irishman can come in and eat all the rest
