whether or not BP would have been nominated is entirely not the point
But isn't part of the point/problem how the general public would have reacted to a film like Black Panther (which critically and technically has very little place getting a nom for Best Picture) getting snubbed from a nom simply off it's cultural relevance? That's what caused the Academy to act so stupid in the first place like you just said.
This. 🕷️

I may be wrong but isn't the new category going to be introduced in 2020? So that doesn't concern Black Panther at all.

Well yeah, this is purely talking from a base to base perspective, like MCU fans can’t be cinephiles etc. What’s going on here is clear as a day - they want a bigger viewership numbers and they believe going shorter and more ‘popular’ will bring the goods. And what’s popular today? Fortnite and Thanos snap. Better mix those two in an opening ceremony. 🕷️

That still won't give them viewership. Other than views on YouTube clips.

Tell that to people who proposed all of these changes. I won’t watch it anyway, jumped off the ship couple of years back. 🕷️

Don't know about 2020 rumor but Black Panther is just a symbol, people trying to figure out 'why', just like BP category was stretched to 5-10 spots due to TDK in 2009 (also most likely). 🕷
