The future of the Game of Thrones franchise has become clearer, and that future lies firmly in the past.

HBO is officially moving forward with a pilot order for an still-untitled Game of Thrones prequel, created by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service) and George R.R. Martin — the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series on which Thrones is based.

Set thousands of years before the events of Thrones, the project chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. A logline from the network teased the plot wihtout divulging any specifics: "Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it's not the story we think we know.

The pilot is based on a story from Goldman and Martin, with teleplay credited to Goldman. Goldman will also serve as showrunner. In addition to Goldman and Martin, executive producers on the series include current Game of Thrones producer Vince Gerardis, as well as Damages and Bloodline co-creator Daniel Zelman.

This is probably what the Amazon's LOTR tv show should have done: explore past events, societies and conflicts that have only the bare minimum connection to the other story set in that world. That's what adapting the Silmarillion would have meant (for the most part because there are still a lot of pretty clearly defined characters and events in there but still...).

Martin has thousands of secondary and tertiary characters that you can develop because most of the details have not been written in stone yet, leaving you with a lot of creative freedom in the way of shaping the story and fleshing out those characters. It is also a way of ensuring that the rabid fanbase is not going to get angry at you for messing up their favourite stories or characters because you can literally make up and focus on characters and events that were never mentioned in ASOIAF or TWOIAF or any of Martin's other supplementary material because the Age of Heroes is full of legends but the details are not known to the characters we know from ASOIAF. The show is bound to feature also a lot more magic and supernatural elements right from the get-go, which should be fun. This gives you a lot of possibilities.

This is a pathetic cynical cash grab. The only plus is D&D are no longer involved.

Lol Star Trek The Next Generation is just a pathetic cynical cash grab too then...or any other Star Trek series for that matter. Or the thousands of superhero movies Marvel wants to make. D&D adapting the books and then making the show their own and keeping it a success is the reason this spin-off idea got started in the first place. That first season ASOIAF readers think is the best one? D&D adapted that, along with a lot of other memorable events and characters from those books that they brought to the tv screen.

If this turns out to be good (and I really hope it will be because I enjoyed Stardust, Kick-Ass and X-Men: Days of Future Past) that's all I'm asking for. Plus, Martin himself seems to be involved and he's got experience working in tv as well.

I haven't read the books, but I'm kinda excited for this. It was clear that they were gonna do a GOT spinoff at some point, and I think they picked the most interesting part of history that at least I know of.

The true origin of the white walkers, that means Children of the Forest stuff right? Because they are some of the most facinating mostly unexplored things about the show for me.

Ironically GRRM seems much more excited by this than the TV show or even TWOW judging by his blog

George R.R. Martin’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ Spin-Off Set To Film In Belfast In October
https://deadline.com/2018/07/george-r-r ... 23801/amp/
The pilot for George R.R. Martin’s recently greenlit Game of Thrones prequel is set to start filming in Belfast in October.

The fantasy drama spin-off, which Martin said has a working title of The Long Night, is reportedly set to film at The Paint Hall in Belfast’s Titanic Quarters. The studio has been used to film the main Game of Thrones series and is also home to the Superman TV prequel Krypton and set to house a Star Wars spin-off next year.

Created by feature writer Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman) & Martin and written by Goldman, based on a story by her and Martin, the pilot, which was greenlit in June, is set thousands of years before the events of Game Of Thrones. The series is described as chronicling “the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

Writing in a blog post in June, Martin added, “None of the characters or actors from Game of Thrones will appear in the new show. All of the successor shows we’ve been developing have been prequels, as I have mentioned before. This one really puts the pre in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before Game of Thrones (like Dunk & Egg), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long). We’re very early in the process, of course, with the pilot order just in.”

We're getting a high budget fantasy show on a prestige television channel. I don't know in what universe that's bad news. There's nothing any more "cynical" about this than HBO greenlighting the original pilot in the first place.
