They screened the new Skyfall trailer before Total Recall at my local cinema. They use Sony's 4K equipment, with 4K servers, and since Total Recall was shot and mastered in 4K, it was that rare moment where I was actually seeing a 4K image on screen. Anyway, I have to say, even though the ALEXA is 2K, when projected at 4K, the image was neck in neck with what the Epic was bringing to the table. It was remarkable. Also, from my three screenings of TDKR in digital IMAX (Dual Barco 33K lumen 2K projection), barring the IMAX footage in TDKR, the Skyfall footage looked better then anything else on screen, even over TDKR's 35mm footage, The Hobbit footage, etc... This all kind of proves Roger Deakin's point that people put too much stock in how many "K's" are in an image for me.
It seems like his switch to digital was worth it. Digital IMAX seems really interesting and efficent.
