it's a pretty powerful film

For those of you familiar with Tolkien's works, is there enough interesting material to make a compelling prequel to LOTR?

Yes. War of elves. Sauron himself has an active and crucial participation (spoiler alert... is about a ring...)

Now, seriously, if it's well directed, it will blow our minds. The Tolkien Universe is astonishing. Sauron had physical form... Well, my guess is that this will end just about the intro-flashback of The Fellowship movie.

Most of it would need to be made up. The First Age has the most material and has clear narratives. The Akallabeth period also has a good amount. Pre-Hobbit and post-LotR have the least amount of narrative available.
