Sam Shepard, the celebrated avant-garde playwright and Oscar-nominated actor, died on Thursday at his home in Kentucky. He was 73.

He had one scene in Killing Them Softly and he was a bad ass in it. Also, I'm watching Bloodline now and his absence will have more weight on me now.

First experienced Sam Shepard not via cinema but by studying True West in Secondary School. It left quite an impression.

A very sturdy, dependable performer too, with a well deserved Oscar nom for The Right Stuff.
