Almost everything takes a backseat to/is a platform for Oldman's, granted, great performance, and I'm not sure how to feel about that. First two thirds worked brilliantly in that regard then when you'd think it'll ramp up - especially given what happens - it winds down.... Wright/Delbonnel not trying to ape his own ATONEMENT and DUNKIRK visually by providing a different visual POV of the war is definitely refreshing, and so are the other tableaux floruishes. Certainly worth checking out, it's funnier than I thought it would be (but in the appropriate just right British way which the audience around me certainly seemed to appreciate - tone is spot on, frankly) and definitely a good companion to Dunkirk also. And yes, Marianelli's score hype has been justified too.

This is a brilliant review by Kermode and shows why he is the best YouTube critic. He goes into what he likes and dislikes detailedly within 8 minutes and the partnership with Simon Mayo pays off with them offering differing perspectives.

The cinematography was great. Loved the opening shot.
When I was watching this I kept on comparing this with The Crown. Morgan is a much stronger screenwriter than McCarten. It's ironic that, for a person who is so known for his speech and for a film that celebrates the power of speech, McCarten's words feel verbose, pointless, and sometimes tonally misplaced. There is much more dramatic weight in every single one of Morgan's words in The Crown.

I really liked this. Score and cinematography was phenomenal, and Oldman's performance is divine. He's definitely one of my favorite actors.
Also it was way funnier than I thought it was going to be.
One tiny gripe I had with the story was
how quickly Mendelsohn/the king changed his mind about Churchill. Would have loved to see more of the issues he was dealing with to gain more sympathy for the character.
