Way too much, but the scenes that are gonna be most talked about haven't been shown.

I'd advice staying away from any promo stuff, and watch other Del Toro films to hype yourself instead.
That's what I did, and I was just swept away into this other world.

Do you think my viewing will be severely hurt by me watching it once? The biggest thing I remember
is Michael Shannon killing that dude. Don't tell me if that's correct or not but it's basically what it looks like.

I don't think it'd be wise to have those questions answered.
But if you really have to know:
Yes. The trailer has flashes of scenes that will spoil key events in the film.
Stop trying to recall scenes from the trailer... That won't help.
