Julianne Moore will reteam with writer-director Todd Haynes in his adaptation of Wonderstruck, the children’s novel by Brian Selznick, author of The Invention Of Hugo Cabret. Moore, who won the Oscar in February for Still Alice, got an Oscar nomination when she worked with Haynes on Far From Heaven. Haynes has two other actresses squarely in the Oscar buzz, as he is promoting Carol with Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett.
Wonderstruck follows the intertwined narratives of two deaf children, Ben and Rose. Ben lives with his family in Minnesota in 1977, and runs off to New York following his mother’s death when a mysterious note shows up. Rose, who is locked in a house in 1927 New Jersey, also escapes to New York to see her idol, film actress Lillian Mayhew. The film is being produced by Christine Vachon, Pam Koffler and John Sloss.
Amazon Studios is nearing a deal to finance, produce and distribute writer-director Todd Haynes‘ “Wonderstruck,” which will reunite the director with Julianne Moore, TheWrap has learned.
Based on the children’s novel by “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” author Brian Selznick, “Wonderstruck” follows the intertwined narratives of two deaf children, Ben and Rose. Ben lives with his family in Minnesota in 1977, when a mysterious note prompts him to run off to New York following his mother’s death. Rose, who is locked in a house in 1927 New Jersey, also escapes to New York to see her idol, film actress Lillian Mayhew.
“Wonderstruck” will be produced by Christine Vachon (“Carol”) and Pam Koffler (“Still Alice”) of Killer Films and John Sloss (“Boyhood”). Amazon Studios executive Alan Khamoui will oversee the project on behalf of the company.
Michelle Williams is in talks to co-star with Julianne Moore in Todd Haynes’ next film, “Wonderstruck.”
Amazon Studios will finance, produce and distribute the movie. Based on Brian Selznick’s critically acclaimed novel, Ben and Rose are children from two different eras who secretly wish their lives were different. Ben longs for the father he has never known, while Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his home and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out on quests to find what they are missing that unfold with mesmerizing symmetry.
After an extensive casting search, newcomer Millicent Simmonds has landed a primary role in Todd Haynes’ next film Wonderstruck. Based on the novel by Brian Selznick, the Amazon Studios pic will chart the intertwined stories of two deaf children: Ben, who lives with his family in Minnesota in 1977 and runs off to New York following his mother’s death when a mysterious note shows up, and Rose, locked in a house in 1927 New Jersey, who also escapes to New York to see her idol, film actress Lillian Mayhew.
The 13-year-old Simmonds, a deaf actress from Utah, will play Rose, whose half of Wonderstruck will be presented as a silent film in both a nod to movie history and an aesthetic designed to capture her perspective. In addition, this section of the narrative will see an unprecedented number of deaf actors in roles that would normally go to hearing actors.
Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams and Jaden Michael also star, with more cast to be announced soon.
Haynes is directing Wonderstruck from a script by Selznick, with Christine Vachon, Pam Koffler and John Sloss producing and Brian Bell and Sandy Powell executive producing.
