I've never really cared about Star Wars aside from Empire Strikes Back.

RJ made a great film, but really didn't left many pay-offs for the conclusion. Which is a flaw not for TLJ, but the saga overall.Johnson, however, doesn’t play things as safe as Abrams and some of his story points are unexpected. In fact, he not only advances the overall narrative but brings it almost to a conclusion. There seems to be very little left for Episode IX to accomplish beyond tying up some loose ends.
Yeah, it's certainly a shame that Johnson really wrapped up that one question conclusively with no wiggle-room whatsoever...

What about Rey and Kylo Ren? they are enemies whose relationship dictates the survival of the galaxy! They basically fucked through the force and sincerely care for eachother, yet they must fight. TLJ deepened and complicated their relationship. it didn't resolve it.
The central conflict is obviously far from resolved too. The Resistance has to rebuild itself from almost nothing. Luke reignited hope in the Galaxy. We've yet to really see a "star war" between Resistance and First Order, and TROS will do that. finally, and maybe most importantly(?), TROS has to end by establishing a new status quo that acknowledges the sins of the jedi and the sith, a mediation between Kylo Ren, Luke and Rey's philosophical viewpoints in TLJ, to end the series in a way that connects the thematic thread from TPM to TROS.
its a LOT for JJ to tackle in one movie to be honest, maybe too much to do justice to it all. i'd say it's the opposite of what Berardinelli's saying.

Spoilers for this have been so batshit that I believe it has the potential of surpassing Star Trek 2009 as J.J.'s best, on bravery merits alone. I' ve been calling him out for being the safe nostalgia guy, but this is anything but, despite Sheev's return.
