Rian Johnson should not have written this movie.

And on the contrary, I felt like this was the most OT Star Wars since ESB/ROTJ, quirks and eastern philosophy included.
Can’t imagine Lucas writing a better Yoda in his prequel form tbh.
About the characters, DJ is basically a Marin Drzic character (or Black Adder if you like), servant who gets the best out of life and plays the role perfectly in any given time. He understands that ‘ones who go up tend to go down just as quickly’ and it works both ways.

Holdo is the perfect example of a rebel, she shows both qualities of a leader and compassion. She also gives you that BSG styled grit, in form of military hierarchy and true leadership. The only new character I didn’t like that much was Rose, worked for about five minutes at the begining before getting into formulaic storyline and ending up serving another character. And those who were either caricatures or tools (you know which ones) were that on purpose, to either lighten the material or elevate other characters.

The entirety of TLJ is about old handing over the baton, now fully, after Solo’s death, where it all began. Leia watches over Holdo who watches over Poe. Luke watches over Rey and Kylo.
...and Yoda still teaches Luke a lesson or two about The Force.
I’m not saying any of this to convert you, but to tell you that some aspects can’t be easily dissmised either.

‘Kylo and Rey are the only ones that work, end of story.’ - not as easy. All of these players are cogs in a machinery. Some are bigger, some smaller, but they all play a certain role. And back to DJ, I’d also add that he’s probably the most Rian Johnson character in this, the most radical turn you can get in seeing how all of these little stories work as a whole. It’s like giving a deathstick guy from AOTC a prominent role, and some brain to begin with. If that’s not progressive thinking I don’t know what is.

Just wait for the usual archetypes in Solo standalone and wait for the jawns to come.
Well you're right it's not going to convince me, convert me, or whatever. I do appreciate your thoughts and seeing your point of view. You can write about how great this movie is and break it down by every piece, how everything works to show the genius but I don't agree. I did not love this movie. I don't get the Holdo praise. I didn't think everything worked with Luke, Rey, and Kylo but that's only thing that kept me engaged. Sure, they passed the baton off after dropping and letting it bounce off the pavement a few times. The new characters have not earned it for me

And that solo film oh man, I can only imagine.

That purple lady was ridiculous. Laura Dern does not fit into the Star Wars universe. We don't need to see all these side stories about minor characters. That's what the EU is for. We never saw how Crix Madine and General Dodonna are brave, courageous leaders, except for hints and allusions. It's not necessary for the saga. That purple lady wasn't necessary at all.

That whole part of the movie wasn't necessary.

The amount of drop and leave nonsense you have on this forum is ridiculous considering your post count but let’s see. Let’s pretend your previous post wasn’t ‘X person shouldn’t have write Y movie’, which is as discussion inviting as, say, barfing over someone’s argument.

‘That purple lady’, you mean Holdo? Got it.

Laura Dern is a very, very capable actress with years of experience. Actor’s role is to blend into any sort of film environment. Are you saying Laura Dern is bad at what she does?

‘We don’t need to see all these side stories about minor characters.’ Ever heard of episodes? The purpose of one would be to...? Look up Homer for that, the blind guy. Also, who are these side characters exactly? I’m going to take a wild guess: previously mentioned Holdo, Rose... perhaps DJ? Is that it? None of them have a particularly background revealing side story, except for Rose, who is a major new character, and in service of Finn’s development. She’s probably going to be a major player in IX so of course she’s getting a Star Wars 101 background. And all of these three are developed within the structure of a singular narrative = to escape the first order. You loose one of these elements, you weaken the entire structure.

‘But I don’t like the structure.’

That’s fine. All of us like different things.

I never said I don’t like the structure. Don’t put words in my mouth.

Laura Dern was miscast. Miscasting happens to capable actors all the time.

And I was referring to the amount of attention given to purple lady as the side-story. It was unnecessary and uncharacteristic of the saga. It seemed like something out of Rogue One. Remember that guy who crashed into the Super Star Destroyer in Return of the Jedi? That guy was a badass, yet we disn’t need to know anything about him. If she was supposed to help Poe develop then it failed because I was more focused on her than Poe. If it really was about Poe than that is just further BS for all kinds of reasons.

Honestly, there's no point in questioning it.

I don’t know why exactly but it’s a fun time. There are issues. It could’ve been better. The things that bother me didn’t bother me enough to take the fun out.

I actually enjoy it more than Revenge of the Sith because Revenge of the Sith is depressing and sad.
