Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi is off to an inauspicious start in China, its final major box-office test. The Star Wars franchise historically has underperformed in China, but the early results for The Last Jedi look even worse than expected.

The film earned $560,000 (3.65 million RMB) in midnight previews, well behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $2.5 million (16 million RMB) in previews — and way behind The Fate of the Furious' record $8.7 million preview total (60 million RMB).

Worse still, Friday's early box-office results have The Last Jedi clearly losing to local comedy The Ex-Files 3: The Return of the Exes. As of 1:30 pm, Beijing time, The Last Jedi had earned approximately $4 million (26 million RMB) compared to Ex-Files 3's $6.6 million (43 million RMB), according to data from mobile ticketing service Maoyan.

The results came despite The Last Jedi getting substantially more screens — a 35.6 percent share of all Chinese screens compared to Ex-Files' 32.3 percent share (again, as of 1:30 pm on Friday). Ex-Files also opened in China a full week ago.

But Avatar is a good movie.

Avatar is terrible. It got its praise for its imagery and innovation. It's an extremely forgettable and hamfisted take on Native Americans and colonialists, with tons of cheeseballs characters and a main character with less depth than Tommy.

"He has a different opinion than me, therefore he is a troll!" Where did you learn that definition of the term "troll"?

Even if that's true, it doesn't make it hold up any better in 2018.

In your opinion. It still works for me, even though it’s a lesser effort than T2, Aliens, The Abyss DC or even True Lies.
