The fourth Transformers movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction, isn’t due out until June 27th, but it won’t be the last one in the franchise. No sequels have officially been announced, but no one at Paramount is going to say, “You know what, guys? I think the Transformers movies have had a good run here. Let’s go out on top. We need to give this franchise the dignity and respect it deserves, let it lay low, and really take the time to develop a good, strong story.”

The studio hasn’t revealed future plans for the series, but we could be seeing the fifth installment in 2017. According to TFW2005, Hasbro, the company behind the Transformers toys and a partner in the movies, has released promo material with “Q2 2017” alongside a Transformers 5 placeholder logo. 2017 could even be on the late side since there was only a two-year gap between the first three movies (2007, 2009, 2011, respectively). Asked about “Transformers 5” literally a few hours after he finished “Transformers: Age of Exctinction,” and what’s next for the series, Michael Bay quipped half-seriously, “There’s a lot that’s unexplored, but that’s for the next director to figure out.” He added, “They’re hard movies to do and it takes every day for two years. They’re fun, but they’re hard.” Bay has talked about a potential handoff in the past, even saying he’d get the new cast and franchise off the ground and then split, and it seems this time, he actually meant it.

In an interview with USA Today, the paper says the filmmaker “believes he will pass the baton for future Transformer movies to a new director while he turns his focus elsewhere.”

"There's kind of a new chapter, a new direction in movies I want to make," Bay said. "I have a lot of stories to tell. And it's about flexing new muscles." One of those directions is a passion project documentary on elephant poaching which the filmmaker has discussed in the past.

So it seems this time that Bay actually will hand off the “Transformers” franchise, but that really shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. One could argue that Bay already does that through his Platinum Dunes production shingle, getting some of his younger protégés like Jonathan Liebesman to direct various projects like weekend’s successful “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot
