Netflix and Marvel announced a while back that Luke Cage is getting a Netflix series, but in regards to casting, Terry Crews (who's campaigned for the role for a long time) said this recently:
Anything can happen. All I know is scheduling and all that stuff—anything can happen. I’m open to all kinds of things, but who knows? Actually I took myself out of the Luke Cage running a while back, just because it was people trying to put people against each other.

[It was] Idris vs. Michael Jai and I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, this is not even greenlit! Can we talk to Marvel? Why are you talking to me? Don’t put me against my homeboy for a movie that’s not existing.’ I said, ‘Take me out!’

I heard [it’s greenlit] but I haven’t gotten any calls. I’ve been hearing stuff like, ‘oh you’re too old,’ and I’m like, ‘Man do my workout 20 years ago and we’ll talk about who’s too old (laughs).’ Like I said, anything can happen, I never rule anything out. I’m game. There are no rules. What’s up, Marvel? I’m right here, baby. I ain’t goin nowhere. You know where I live!"
I noticed that part of the quote, so I did a little digging. Idris Elba confirmed Marvel met with him for the part of Luke Cage, but nothing came of it, and Jai White has said he'd be willing to do it.

Also, Dwayne Johnson threw his hat in the ring:
Thank U @Marvel President Kevin Feige for the nod. I'll be ready. #RockAsCage #HeroForHire http://bit.ly/11EJTft
Out of these candidates, I'm personally hoping for Elba or The Rock.

Since when was The Rock above anything?

They've both expressed interest, and from Netflix has said it sounds one of the conditions of the Netflix deal was some sort of quality standard (each episode has a pretty significant budget). I could see it happening.

lol isn't that the Old spice guy?

I say give it to Terry Crews. Dwayne Johnson belongs to DC now yo.

Please god not the rock. Just get the best African American actor (25-40) available. HGH, steroids and a personal trainer will do the rest.

Yep. The very same.

I agree with Crews, (though the Dwayne Johnson/DC thing hasn't been confirmed), but if they decide to have Elba play dual roles that'd be ideal IMO.

Idris Elba Denies Playing Luke Cage in Reddit AMA, Says The Character Has Already Been Cast

Well that's certainly interesting, since his series is slated to premiere last before Defenders. Maybe this means we'll have a group announcement for Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist at NYCC? They already have Cox there for the Daredevil panel so it's not out of the question to put them all onstage at once, like how they announced Renner and Ruffalo two years out for Avengers.
