THR reports that Villeneuve will direct the sci-fi drama "The Story Of Your Life." Based on the short story by Ted Chiang, and with a script by Eric Heisserer ("The Thing," "Final Destination 5"....hmm....), the story follows a linguist hired by the military to communicate with an alien craft to try and figure out why they've come to Earth. And in the course of her communication with the aliens, she has flashbacks that could reveal the answer of why they have arrived. We love us a dose of brainy sci-fi, and concerns about the screenwriter aside, we'd be pretty stoked to see Villeneuve tackle the genre. And the premise looks like something Villeneuve could get his (thematic) hands into.

The writer is an odd choice, but Villenueve doing sci-fi seems cool. Has anyone read this?

Aaron Guzikowski was a odd choice too for Prisoners, Contraband sucked big time, I'm sure it's a great script, Villeneuve said he wanted to choose the best one...turned down big franchises opportunities (Terminator 5, Star Trek 3)

Lot of projects on his agenda, let's see what he'll do first

I'm curious about the status of two projects that you're developing: one with Jessica Chastain, and the sci-fi "Stories of Your Life."

The first one with Jessica Chastain is an adaptation of the Russell Banks book "The Darling." [It's a] very strong story but it's in development right now, we are working on the screenplay and it won't be my next project. "The Story of Your Life" is a sci-fi movie that is based on a short story written by Ted Chiang, which deals with the poetry of words and the strength of language and how language contains your perception of the world. It's really about a university linguist that is hired by the US government to try to translate the language of extra terrestrials that just landed on Earth. It's very poetic, and a strong take on an alien landing on Earth. It's very original, very fresh and very inspiring. I'm very excited about that project. I'm supposed to shoot it at the beginning of 2015.

Eventhough I had posted the link for the short story earlier, I had never read it. So I just read it now and I am left spellbound by its style. I am interested to see how they go about adapting it and bring out the visual aspects, as the story is mainly abstract and concerned with linguistics and physics. Would really love to read the script, so if anyone has a link, please do PM me.
