Is it really that surprising that this film made that much money? It's a superhero film, the type of film that is synonymous with the term 'blockbuster' nowadays, and is about a well-known character and it's an animated feature, which means the kids will watch and re-watch it over and over and get their friends to watch it as well.

Average Illumination/Disney/Pixar animation does two times that, at least, so every dollar is a step towards a better world and certainly not an easy feat.

Well superhero animated films haven't been doing great since like ever. Just look at their theatrical releases. The Mask of Phantasm, Teen Titans Go. LEGO Batman did well but even that underperformed compared to the LEGO Movie, considering Batman was the standout of that movie.

This is true; $300 million is underwhelming, relative to the overwhelming critical acclaim it got.
Just like The Lego Batman Movie, it was hurt by the overwhelming abundance of animated (superhero) media on TV, which makes casual moviegoers less-than-keen to pay hard-earned cash to see one in theaters.
Critical acclaim saved this and The Lego Batman Movie from doing even worse.
Finally saw this. Yeah, best movie of the year for me. The animation in this is superb, hope it gets a Oscar. Everything I say will be redundant, that's how amazing this is.
Good luck, Far From Home.
