Passion of the Christ is a perspective or interpretation of something with at least an attempt to be authentic.

Braveheart is aggressively stupid film with ludicrous unmotivated villains like McGoohan and Bannen, it's basically completely and utterly racist but I guess that's OK because I'm not sure why, and absolutely no shades of gray. Like, even when they embark on the imaginary sack of York nobody even turns around to Wallace and says "Hey, maybe you're becoming like them" or "This is also wrong" it's just like "Nah, suck shit English people you deserve it because Edward I is the Medieval Hitler." This approach is terrific if you want to make a film about Robin Hood or Jedi Knights and other fantastical shit, or even if you're conjuring up fictional characters in a real scenario like the similarly simplistic Gladiator, but not when this is supposed to be ostensibly a portrait of a moment in time where men stood up for their independence and freedom.

I'm no strong supporter of the film, though I do like it. The problem with that analysis is how you miss the ultimate point and purpose behind the conception of the film. It's meant to evoke the feel of a mythic old tale, the kind told over kegs of ale at a warm campfire or pub. Unlike other historical epics, Braveheart isn't attempting anything particularly literal. It's deliberately reductive and binary. Simple? Maybe. Repetitive? Sure. But you can hardly smite a film on those grounds alone. Gibson modeled it after a poem for christ sake.
