The 90's movies. I actually don't know much about the comics. I read The Killing Joke and that's it. But I also want to read The Dark Knight Returns.

Also A Long Halloween (has a noirish feel to it that I liked; although it features many Batman rogues it doesn't rely heavily on the DC continuity; it has a mistery in it, a "whudunnit" which leaves you thinking at the end, twist and turns; was an inspiration in part for TDK as it also features Two Face's origin and Harvey Dent's life prior to that point - the comic is a Year Two, kinda, to Batman's life). This is one the best batman stories and I must say one of the more accesible one.

Also, while you're at it, check out Long Halloween. TDK is based off of it.

I think you should read the inspirations for the TDK trilogy first, and them go for more. The Killing Joke you've read. You can also go with Year One (inspiration for Batman Begins, sans Ras) and The Long Halloween. Year One being written by Frank Miller (The Dark Knight Return, Sin City, 300)

In my copy of TLH, there's an introduction by Christopher Nolan.
