Can anyone name any? I'm not talking about movies that are slightly better than the first movie in a series, I'm talking about the ones that completely overshadow the original, that are far superior and far better.

The ones that always come to my mind are The Dark Knight and The Empire Strikes Back. Batman Begins was an OK comic book origins movie, nothing to write home about. That's what Nolan set out to do. Then The Dark Knight came along and obliterated it. It's far better directed, much more mature and dark and was far better acted. It also made way more money. You also have Star Wars which was a fun summer blockbuster. But The Empire Strikes Back was so much more than that. It was made by a proper director and took all of George Lucas's characters and gave them proper maturity and heart.

T2 is basically just as good. Both masterpieces honestly.

I would definitely not describe T2 as a mindless action flick. It's one of the greatest most well crafted action films ever.
