And to think that if Cutter had only made the tank a little less needlessly thick, we wouldn't have had a movie.

The point is that they care about their trick more than their lives - if Cutter unlocked it, then everybody would know the trick, and that's all they care about in the end.

Well... it's not really a "trick" if a stagehand has to use his own key to unlock the tank for you.

The stagehand doesn't use a key to open it because it's a trick padlock.
