Well since Bruce didn't have any family he pretty much had to step up and be his father. Kinda makes sense why he does what he does.

The Sense of the Batman Comics is a man, sacrificing him too fight the crime, because Bruce isn't bruce anymore, he is Batman. And I think the movie represent it very well, especially with the scene where Bruce tells everybody that they should go-Bruce Wayne (the playboy) is a mask, with the only purpose to be able to be Batman. And Alfred is a helper of him, and does the same thing-without Alfred, Bruce's Mask would fall off, and so Alfred sacrifices him just as Bruce does.
