Not true. Look at James Bond for example, we've never had a detailed look at his past in the 23 movies he's been in. Even in Casino Royale which was a major revamp didn't show Bond's past. It has never stopped Bond from being one of the most badass and best loved movie characters ever.

Yes there was a need. It was a deep and human story of one of the greatest comic book characters. After the atrocities that were Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, the Batman franchise needed to be redirected towards its proper dark nature. As such, Christopher Nolan sought the opportunity to do something that had never been done before: tell the origin story of Batman in a live-action movie. It was a GREAT decision, and it inspired many reboots/origin stories ever since: Casino Royale, The Amazing Spider Man, Iron Man, Man of Steel, etc. The list goes on. Batman Begins was one of the greatest things to happen to cinema.
