Well, Nolan wanted to make his Howard Hughes biopic after Insomnia but he decided to do Batman Begins because of Scorsese's Aviator.

Joe P was cut since he was annoyed with Nolan. He wanted to be Gordon, and Nolan wanted him to be Flass. Both sides are understandable, but it's not like it was Nolan's fault in causing problems in that pairing.
