How does Leonard know?

A few weeks ago in my AP Psych class we were learning about conditions that can affect people's memories. My teacher showed us a video of this composer guy who can't form new memories (like Leonard). The composer doesn't even know he has the condition in the first place so how does Leonard knows he has it? because he must've learned that he was diagnosed with the condition after he got hit in the head so there is no way he could've known later on that he has the condition. Probably a stupid question but it has been bothering me for a while.
