you gotta be aware of one thing, even though many people even critics have said how can Leonard know he has this condition and such Nolan himself explains through the whole film that Leonard is indeed able to adapt through repetition, this is the way of conditioning that didn't work with Sammy but worked for him, he says that at one point... this is the reason why he remembers the basics of what he's been through, we see he can adapt through his system, test himself (like the scene with the call girl) as well as use all this to fool himself into believing something that is not real in order to find some purpose to his existence.
The first memory of Sammy (a fraud) was imprinted in his mind by Catharine (his 1e love). She knows Sammy as it got Leonard a big promotion and she's only with Leonard because of his money (his real love is his 2e love, Natalie). After remembering Sammy as a guy who pretended to have CRS (day 1 to 3), he then decides to remember Sammy as a guy who really had CRS (day 4 to 7 - he needs a system) and finally he becomes Sammy (day 8 to 11 - acting on instinct).
