I think the limping is just the consequence of his fall in the end of TDK. I also think there is no place for such a huge plot point like the breaking of the bat (breaking the back, operation, years of recovery, gain the old power back, etc.). I don't think Nolan is a emotionless robot, but I think he is professional enough to hide emotions. You should also remember that these awards shows taken place 1 year after Ledgers death, every sad tear would be nothing more then hypocrisy.
